2024 ACCSSO Conference
Asheville Hosts Transformative ACCSSO Conference on Security and Safety Innovations
From April 24-26, 2024, the Four Points by Sheraton in downtown Asheville, NC, became the hub for the latest in safety and security as it hosted the annual ACCSSO conference. This year’s conference not only highlighted the growth of ACCSSO but also set the stage for pivotal discussions on security policies and the integration of technology in safety measures.
Day 1: Kickoff and Key Discussions
The conference began with a warm welcome and quickly transitioned into the ACCSSO Annual Business Meeting. Key points included the election of new officers and the planning of the 2025 events. A significant portion of the afternoon was dedicated to a discussion on armed and unarmed security policies, reflecting the organization's proactive approach to both current and emerging security challenges.
ACCSSO President Zac Schnell from Pamlico Community College initiated the voting process for a new President, marking the end of his term. Zac also outlined the various other open positions and their respective duties. Subsequently, the nominated ACCSSO members agreed to serve as executive board members.

New District I Representative: Lena Thompson (Gaston College)
New District III Representative: Ken Rhodes (Lenoir CC)
The first day also featured an engaging Life Rescue Training session designed for Good Samaritans, provided by EHSI, emphasizing practical skills in emergency situations. The day concluded with LaZoom bus tours of the vibrant settings of downtown Asheville.
Day 2: Engaging with Innovations and Experts
The second day of the conference offered an extensive agenda beginning with a breakfast buffet and vendor setups. The morning sessions included presentations from gold partners True IP Solutions and KNC Technologies, each highlighting their latest technological solutions in security.
Participants engaged in tabletop exercises led by UNC Charlotte’s Emergency Management team, tackling scenarios such as a large event bomb threat and a political protest. These exercises were designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills among participants.
Day 3: Future of Security with AI and Conclusion
The final day featured a noteworthy discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in safety and security led by Zac Schnell from Pamlico Community College. This session provided insights into how AI is being used now and how it could be used in the future.
The conference wrapped up with a session reviewing the effectiveness of the tabletop exercises and closed with remarks that underscored the community's commitment to advancing security and safety. Door prizes and final networking opportunities marked the end of another successful ACCSSO gathering.
With its comprehensive agenda and expert participation, the 2024 ACCSSO conference not only addressed immediate security concerns but also paved the way for future innovations, ensuring that each attendee left equipped with knowledge and connections to foster safer environments.
